Herefordshire is a beautiful un-spoilt rural county. It is an excellent destination for walking, cycling, mountain biking, bird-watching, exploring historical sites and houses, or simply relaxing. Throughout the area are a wide range of pubs and restaurants of recognized quality and character, and there are numerous opportunities to buy local produce. Just over the border into Shropshire is the beautiful historic town of Ludlow, particularly renowned for its restaurants, and food suppliers.
Wigmore is approximately 8 miles west of Ludlow, and a similar distance from the market towns of Leominster, Knighton, Kington and Presteigne. An attractive, thriving village, with schools, a church, pubs and a recently opened community shop, it stands out on the map because of its castle (just a few yards walk from Abbots Lodge).
Further afield Hay-on-Wye is approximately 45 minutes drive to the south west, a delightful town famous for its second hand bookshops, and of course the world renowned Hay Festival. Hereford is 30 minutes drive to the south, a cathedral city (on the river Wye), and Shrewsbury is 45 minutes to the north (on the river Severn).
